What is NAMTA?

Northeast Area Music Teachers Association (NAMTA), founded in 1973, is one of several local chapters of the Iowa Music Teachers Association (IMTA) and Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).  Members of NAMTA join both state and national organizations as well as this local association.  They may participate in state sponsored auditions, festivals, and the certification program.  Activities sponsored by the local group include the Student Achievement Clinic (STAC), Library loan, Workshops, Scholarships, and efforts to educate ourselves and the public to demand good music teachers and bring the status of the private teacher up among professionals.

NAMTA meets the second Friday of each month from September through May except for December.  Meetings are currently held at the Hearst Center for the Arts, 304 W. Seerly Blvd, Cedar Falls. Iowa. Business meeting is at 9:15 a.m. with programs at 10:15 a.m.

Iowa Music Teachers Association (IMTA) is an organization of people dedicated to the promotion of good music for students, teachers, and the listening public.  IMTA is an affiliate of Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).  From the local through the National level, there is a very active student competition program.  Besides sponsoring recitals, piano festivals, composition contests, and other special events, its yearly activities are climaxed in June by an annual state conference for teachers and students.

Certification establishes standards of excellence for the music teaching profession.  Certification is available at the state and national level and demonstrates a commitment to high professional standards to students and colleagues.  There are several options for ways to receive certification including by degree, by testing options, or by a student's merit in auditions.
